As active participants in Automate 2023, our team at witnessed firsthand some interesting shifts and emerging trends in the automation industry through staffing multiple booths at the show and networking with industry leaders. Below, we reflect on the key trends that we observed during the event as well as unique technologies, discussing their implications and how they are shaping the landscape of robotics and automation.

Collaborative Robotic Welding Systems

We've seen a shift from the large, fixed systems typically associated with automotive plants to smaller, more modular, and collaborative systems adaptable to varying part runs and material sizes. Another trend that caught our attention was the emergence of compact, precise robots.  These types of robots showered the show floor, backed by big names like Fanuc, Yaskawa, Yamaha Robotics, and of course Mecademic who provides a prime example of this trend. Despite their small size, these robots are designed for high-precision tasks, challenging the conventional belief that size equates to capability.

Space efficiency is becoming increasingly important in manufacturing environments. As production processes become more complex and facilities strive to maximize output within limited spaces, the demand for smaller, more precise robots is set to rise. Mecademic's ultra-compact robots, with their high repeatability and small footprint, are a clear indication of this trend. Lab automation solutions were in multiple booths throughout the show, with our spotlight on collaborative SCARA (Selective Compliance Assembly Robot Arm) robots.
